If you have dental insurance, it’s only natural to want to maximize your benefits every year. So in this blog from Dodds Dental, we’ll look at a few strategies you can use to maximize your benefits and insurance coverage.
1. Choose An In-Network Dentist When Possible
Most dental plans use the PPO (preferred provider organization) model. That means that you will pay more for out-of-network care compared to in-network care.
At Dodds Dental, we’re in-network with Delta Dental, and also accept indemnity plans and PPO out-of-network plans. Learn more about your options by giving us a call at (562) 439-0754, and schedule an appointment with Dr. Dustin or Dr. Emily Dodds today.
2. Know The 100-80-50 Coverage Rule
This can differ, so you should consult with your policy and your insurer, but most dental plans follow a 100-80-50 scheme for covering your treatments.
This means that 100% of preventive care, like oral exams and teeth cleanings, will be covered at no cost to you. Basic care like fillings and root canals are covered at 80%, while major procedures like dentures, crowns, or dental bridges are covered at 50%. After your insurance pays, you’ll pay the remaining 20% or 50% of the cost, respectively.
This is one of the reasons why you should always schedule two oral exams and teeth cleanings per year. These are 100% covered by your plan, and help prevent oral health issues like cavities and gum disease that may require you to pay out-of-pocket for treatment.
3. Be Aware Of Your Annual Maximum & Yearly Deductible
Just like health insurance, dental insurance has a deductible you must meet before your plan benefits kick in. This is usually much lower than traditional health insurance, though, and most insurers set it at $25 to $250.
You also need to know your annual maximum, which is the maximum amount your insurer will pay toward your care in a single year. This is usually set between $1,000 and $2,000 though there are some plans that don’t have annual maximums.
Make sure to consult with your insurance policy to learn more about your deductible and annual maximum. This will ensure you avoid any surprises when planning your dental care.
4. Sign Up For Our Membership Program If You Don’t Have Dental Insurance
Just because you don’t have dental insurance doesn’t mean you need to overpay for dental care. At Dodds Dental, we have an in-house membership program that’s a great alternative.
Our in-house membership program covers 2 cleanings and oral exams per year, x-rays as needed, and an emergency dental exam, as well as a few other treatments depending on the plan you choose. You’ll also get a 10% to 40% discount on all other procedures. Call today to learn more!
