Exploring your options for cosmetic dentistry in Long Beach? You may be wondering what the difference is between veneers and Lumineers. Is one treatment better than the other? Which one is right for your needs? In this post, we’ll explore the similarities and differences between each treatment. Get all the details you need when comparing veneers versus Lumineers in this blog post from Dodds Dental.
Veneers And Lumineers Are Both Designed To Correct Cosmetic Issues With Teeth
First, let’s start with the similarities. Veneers and Lumineers are basically the same in most ways. Both treatments involve using tooth-shaped pieces of porcelain, which fit over your teeth and cover up the front chewing surfaces. Each veneer is permanently attached to the teeth using a powerful dental cement.
By covering up your teeth, veneers and Lumineers can correct a wide variety of cosmetic dental problems such as slightly crooked teeth, uneven teeth, gaps in your smile, and stained teeth, restoring the beauty of your smile.
Lumineers Are Much Thinner Compared To Veneers
So, how are veneers and Lumineers different? The answer comes down to the thickness of the veneers used in the treatment process. While traditional porcelain veneers are usually about 0.5mm thick, Lumineers are much thinner.
Lumineers use a very thin and durable ceramic material that is usually only about 0.2mm thick, which is about the same thickness as a contact lens. Compared to veneers, Lumineers are a lot thinner.
Lumineers Require Less Preparation And Are Usually Reversible
The primary benefit of the thinness of Lumineers is that they often can be placed without trimming your natural enamel. Since traditional veneers are thicker, some of your enamel must be removed to make room for them, ensuring that they do not add bulk to your teeth.
However, this is not usually necessary with Lumineers. This is why Lumineers are also often called “no-prep” or “minimal-prep” veneers. They can typically be placed while removing very little of your natural enamel.
This also means that Lumineers are reversible. Since no enamel must be removed, it’s possible to have them removed if you change your mind. With traditional veneers, this is not possible due to the larger amount of enamel that must be removed.
Lumineers May Not Be Right For Everyone
While they do have benefits, Lumineers are not right for everyone. Since they are thinner, they are not ideal for covering up teeth with severe stains, as the thinner porcelain may not completely conceal the stained tooth. It’s best to consult with an experienced cosmetic dentist to determine if they’re a good choice for your particular needs.
